Two NYPD officers jailed four years after beating up teen who told one of them dog feces on his shoe smelled like 'doo doo'

Two New York City police officers have been sentenced to jail time for beating up a 17-year-old boy who mocked one of them for stepping in dog feces four years ago.
A judge on Monday handed down a 30-day sentence to NYPD officer Joseph Murphy, 29, and his former colleague Jose Ocasio in connection to the 2011 attack on Tyre Davis in a Bronx alleyway.
'Each engaged in criminal, inexplicable conduct that violated their oaths as officers and violated the public trust,' Justice Julio Rodriguez said during sentencing.

Former NYPD cop Jose Ocasio
Punished: Officer Joseph Murphy (left) and his former colleague Jose Ocasio (right) have been sentenced to 30 days in jail in connection to the 2011 beatdown of then 17-year-old Tyre Davis in The Bronx
Murphy and Ocasio were captured on surveillance video February 18, 2011, punching and kicking Davis, then a senior at Brandeis High School, after arresting him on a disorderly conduct charge.
Davis, from The Bronx, told the New York Daily News at the time that the incident was sparked by a comment he made in passing poking fun at one of the cops.
The teenager was walking with a friend in Fordham Heights that night when he saw a uniformed police officer step in a pile of dog excrement.
'It smells like doo-doo,' Davis recalled calling out.
Davis quickly came to regret his ill-thought remark as a group of officers emerged from an unmarked van, handcuffed him and hauled him off to the 46th Precinct.
The high school senior was later released with a disorderly conduct summons. He was met by officers Murphy and Ocasio outside the police station and led to a nearby alley, where the cops proceeded to punch him in the head.
In the wake of the attack, Davis contacted NYPD's Internal Affairs and lodged a complaint against the vindictive cops, who were arrested five months later.
Ocasio and Murphy had had a run-in with Tyre Davis a week before the February 2011 beatdown when the teen was arrested for trespassing.
Speaking to the News in July, Davis said Officer Murphy slapped him across the face with his metal NYPD shield when the teen asked him for his badge number while sitting handcuffed in the back of a squad car.
In September 2014, Judge Rodriguez convicted Ocasio and Murphy of attempted assault and harassment. Both officers were cleared of the more serious count of assault because Davis did not suffer serious injuries.
Officer Ocasio has since resigned from the force but Murphy still hopes to keep his job, according to his attorney, who said his client was 'deeply disappointed' by the outcome of the case.
A spokesperson for the police department said Murphy has been suspended with pay in the aftermath of the sentencing.

Diamond Bank Sacks Over 1000 Staff

The economic downturn in the country, coupled with the difficult regulatory climate, seems to be taking its toll on the financial sector as one of the top financial institutions, Diamond Banks Plc has sacked over 1,000 workers.
P.M.NEWS Business findings revealed that the latest disengagement by the bank had to do with the need to realign its operations for a tougher 2015, especially as the monetary policy environment continues to get tighter.
Some of the regulatory measures introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria aimed at protecting the economy, according to findings, have started affecting the banks’ profitability.
It was learnt that apart from job cuts, the bank is also planning to reduce the number of new branches to be opened this year. A source within the bank told our correspondent that major projects and sponsorship programmes for third-party companies, which may not readily add to the bottom line, are also due to be axed by the bank.

According to the source, the  affected workers cut across all branches of the bank.

The fortunes of Diamond Bank has recently not been on the positive side as its 2015 first-quarter pre-tax profit fell 9.5 per cent to 8.36 billion naira ($42 million) from a year earlier. The bank did not disclose why profit for the period end-March fell but said in a statement that revenue climbed 5.8 per cent during the period to 40.48 billion naira. The banks profit after tax also fell by 10.72 per cent to N25.48 billion in 2014, compared with N28.54 billion in 2013 as regulatory induced costs continue to suppress profit. Its operating expenses also increased by 19.89 per cent to N92.86 billion in 2014 from N77.40 billion in 2013. Cost-to-income ratio, which measures the ability of a bank in cutting costs while boosting profit, reduced to 72.30 per cent in 2014 as against 66.57 per cent in 2013.

The banks corporate communications unit could not immediately be reached for comment on the development.
P.M.NEWS Business however learnt that more financial institutions are planning to cut their staff strength in the following months, while others are already outsourcing a number of job functions, a development that has seen some of them transfer a significant number of their employees to third-party companies.

One of the banks, Skye Bank Plc, earlier in the year announced that it had transferred its tellers, drivers, security personnel and other support staff members to three outsourcing firms, a move that will affect hundreds of the bank’s workers. The decision, led to the disengagement of the affected employees from the bank and their subsequent transfer to third-party firms.
Skye Bank, however, said in a statement that the move was part of the initiatives to strengthen all cadres of its workforce. According to the statement, the outsourcing companies appointed to take over the employees are Optimum Continental Services, Strategic Outsourcing Limited and Integrated Corporate Services Limited.

The bank gave the assurance that the outsourcing firms would engage the affected employees under the same terms and conditions as they were employed by the financial institution.

Global rating agency, Fitch Ratings, and other international and local research firms had late last year predicted that Nigerian banks would witness a fall in profitability this year.

On November 25, 2014, the CBN’s Monetary Policy Committee devalued the naira by eight per cent; raised Monetary Policy Rate from 12 to 13 per cent; and also increased the private sector Cash Reserve Requirement from 15 to 20 per cent.

The development, which led to the immediate withdrawal of about N500bn from the banking system, was said to have affected the banks adversely.

Also, in a bid to halt the sliding naira, the CBN had in December stopped the banks from keeping any of their funds in foreign currencies. It also said dollars bought from it must be utilized within 48 hours, adding that the actions were aimed at stopping the banks from speculating on the exchange rate.

Experts said the recent regulatory measures would have major negative effects on the banks this year, adding that they were already feeling the effects of previous actions by the CBN, especially the increase in public sector CRR, the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria’s levy increase, and the gradual removal of certain bank charges.

Fitch, in a report released on October 8, 2014, said actions aimed at protecting the economy and the banking system by the CBN would make the profits of the Deposit Money Banks for this year drop.

While recalling that some of the previous regulatory headwinds had led to weaker profitability and “stemmed credit growth” in the first half of 2014, the rating agency said Nigerian banks’ assets growth and earnings would experience further fall over the next 18 months.

Mourinho hails 'absolutely amazing' Manchester City midfielder

Jose Mourinho has hailed Frank Lampard as ‘absolutely amazing’.
The Chelsea manager is on the verge of winning his third Premier League title in two stints at Stamford Bridge - but saved praise for Lampard, who made a shock move to Manchester City last summer.
Mourinho has described the measure of the task he faced when trying to make up for the loss of the former England international.
This week TV presenter Holly Willoughby described Lampard as a City legend - but Mourinho insists he will always be a Chelsea great.
“Chelsea lost, at the end of last year, what I consider, for sure, to be one of the five most important players in the history of Chelsea FC: Frank Lampard,” he said. “We lost that player, but life goes on.
"You have to think about the future and to build, and you have to go with that.
“In Frank Lampard, Chelsea lost a match-winner with a number of goals he scored, a big character, a player without injuries who played every game, a player who beat every record in the Premier League – playing time, number of goals, goals from midfield – an absolutely amazing player.
“We lost him, but life goes on.”
Lampard was a free signing for City and made an impressive start for the Premier League champions, with seven goals before Christmas.
He was set to join New York City in January, but extended his stay at the Etihad until the end of the season before heading off to MLS.

Diezani Madueke: I have stepped on many toes

biscon_madueke
The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke says she has stepped on many toes while giving her best to the nation.
She said: “I do believe that I have done the best for Nigeria in this job and I have attained many firsts in the history of oil and gas especially in the reforms that we have done. In this period of time, I have stepped on many big foots particularly the fleets of the cabals that were in the industry when we came in.
On the issue of the $10m private jet purchase, she said: “For me to be tagged with various tags of corruption, $10 million jet purchase, who buys jet for $10 million dollars for goodness sake? And $20 billion missing money for which PWC had done a report and the $1.48 billion which is not missing, which is actually money transferred by the NNPC to NPDC which is a subsidiary and NPDC has actually started making payments under my directives.
“So let me state it clearly for the records that Nigeria is my country and I am not going anywhere, I love my country and I do think that I have done the best for my country and I would also like to point these malicious, malevolence, vindictive libels coming out of online entities need to stop”.
“We have done enough for this industry, we cannot please everybody. Yes, we have stepped on toes but we did that in the best interest of Nigeria and thousands of Nigerians have benefited from our reforms in the system.”

Lawyer for Michael Douglas' son Cameron reveals how she smuggled drugs into jail for the 'incarcerated meth dealer' after falling in love with him

The young lawyer who lost her job after she was discovered to have been smuggling drugs into prison for the son of Michael Douglas is telling her story in a new novel.
Jennifer Ridha met Cameron Douglas in October 2009, just a few months after he was arrested when police found him with almost a pound of methamphetamine in a New York City hotel, enough to charge him with intent to distribute.
Ridha, serving as his legal counsel with the firm Lankler, Siffert and Wohl, soon began smuggling Xanax to Cameron in prison, and falling in love with the troubled young man.
Then, just five months after meeting Cameron, the then 35-year-old was busted by federal agents for supplying him with drugs.

Ridha writes about falling in love with Cameron and smuggling him Xanax in prison in Criminal That I Am
The New York Post revealed details from Ridha's book, Criminal That I Am, which is set to be released next month.
Ridha says that Cameron had difficulty adjusting to life behind bars when she first met him at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown Manhattan while he awaited his trial and sentence.
His personal psychiatrist told her he suffered from 'co-morbid depression' and 'anxiety disorders,' but doctors had decided he would not be able to take Xanax.
It was after she saw him drenched in sweat and covered in hives that she first brought him pills, claiming she smuggled two into the MCC in her back pocket at their next meeting.
The next time, she placed 30 of the pills, which she also had a prescription for, in a party balloon, which Cameron stored behind bars by hiding it in his rectum.
It was also around this time that their relationship became physical, with the two both telling one another they were in love.
'He seems taller, greater, than when he is sitting across from me,' says Ridha in the book of the first time Douglas embraced her.
'He grabs me. And kisses me. And I kiss him back.'

Federal agents busted Ridha in February 2010 when Cameron was caught sharing the pills in prison, but the two continued to see one another, and Cameron had Ridha lie on a form so she could visit him when he was eventually moved to a facility in Pennsylvania where he was serving five years behind bars.
It was not until October 2011 however that Ridha learned she was busted because Cameron shared the pills with a government informant.
For this, Douglas was sentenced to an additional four-and-a-half years in prison.
Charges against Ridha were ultimately dropped, though she lost her job.
Ridha is currently a graduate student in legal anthropology, urban studies, and criminal justice.
As for Cameron, he will be eligible for parole in 2018.

His father Michael said of his son during his trial that though he blamed himself for his son's problems, Cameron 'was going to be dead or somebody was gonna kill him. I think he has a chance to start a new life, and he knows that.'

Plane carrying Bill and Chelsea Clinton on their Africa tour makes 'unscheduled' landing in rural Tanzania due to engine trouble

A chartered plane carrying former President Bill Clinton and his daughter made an unplanned landing Wednesday at a rural outpost in Tanzania after one of the aircraft's engines lost power.
Tanzania was the first stop on Clinton's nine-day tour of Africa, which will take him and Chelsea Clinton to four countries, including Kenya, Liberia and Morocco.
The father-daughter team, accompanied by an entourage of 20 wealthy donors, plan to visit projects funded by the Clinton Development Initiative to boost agriculture, health, education and wildlife conservation

The aircraft, a Canadian turboprop Dash 7, was traveling from Iaranga to Lake Manaya in northern Tanzania Wednesday when it encountered an unspecified mechanical issue.
The pilot was forced to make an 'unscheduled' landing at the remote Dodoma fueling station after one of the plane’s four engines experienced a 'problem,' according to Clinton's aides.
It was reported earlier by CBS News that the aircraft made an emergency landing, but the former president's spokesperson later stated that there was never an emergency.
The faulty engine was quickly repaired and the plane took off again about 45 minutes after the unplanned touchdown.
According to a Clinton Foundation spokesman, the Africa trip is similar to past journeys taken on a near-annual basis.
Kenya will follow Tanzania be next on the itinerary – including a visit to a Clinton Global Initiative-funded anti-elephant poaching project – followed by Liberia.

Last on the itinerary is Morocco, where King Mohammed VI will host an opulent conference paid for by donors including a phosphate company – owned by the nation's government – which has donated $1million, according to Politico.
One of the Tanzania projects, according to the Associated Press, is a commercial farm operated by the Clinton Development Initiative that partners with thousands of neighboring smallholder farmers to provide training and seeds for corn and soy crops.
On Wednesday, the Clintons traveled to a cornfield in Tanzania that is part of the farm project.
The former president surveyed the crop outputs that have increased as a result of improved techniques and technology, according to the Clinton Foundation.
It's a far cry from earlier Africa trips he took aboard a plane owned by Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted pedophile whose private aircraft became known as the 'Lolita Express.'
Flight manifest records published in January show Clinton was on at least 11 of those Epstein flights, which included some Africa jaunts.
Some of those trips also included two of Epstein's female associates who are thought to have provided dozens of underage girls to their boss and his well-connected friends.
